Escaping abusive situations can be extremely difficult, and many times even dangerous. Women may have nowhere to go, and so they face an impossible choice: stay in their current situation, or go out onto the street. Shalom House provides a third choice. Whether the difficulties are financial, emotional, substance related, or circumstantial, Shalom House provides a shelter for homeless women and children to safely stay.
For safety purposes, the shelter is located at an undisclosed location in Harrisburg. Shalom House provides for all basic physical needs: a bed, food, clothing, health and hygiene products, and even a temporary address and phone number. While all of these goods and services are crucial, Shalom House recognizes that teaching women to avoid future homelessness is the most important task. Life skills training, referral services, case management, and a computer center for expanding current skills and preparing resumes make staying off the street in the future possible for women in seemingly dead-end situations.
Shalom House also works to provide permanent housing for disabled, chronically homeless women and female veterans. This is done through the SHARP program, and can fully support up to 6 women, as well as their children, at one time.
Shalom House is an admirable nonprofit performing a valuable task for women and children who need help the most. Support what they are doing and help women going through difficult times get back on their feet.
